I always find it funny that my fridge is either really full or completely empty. It usually depends on what I have going on in the next few weeks to month that determines if I'm going to take the time to go shopping. I once saw an article about what different types of people have in their… MORE

The chatter begins around late August. Where’s Thanksgiving this year? Seattle? Portland? Idaho? Tucson? And every year it’s the same. It doesn’t matter who’s hosting, at the first hint of family getting together, SLS and I quickly volunteer to do the cooking. To the ears of parents and… MORE

On numerous occasions I've been invited to someones' house for a party, get-together or some other event, and asked to bring a side dish. Sometimes I know what the main dish is and sometimes I don't. On this occasion I do know what the main dish is, but not all of the ingredients.  The… MORE

Back when America was just a pup, it was seriously awash in booze. I’m talking late 18th, early 19th centuries, when people were regularly drinking with the dawn and carrying on well into the evening, when presumably they fell on their noses. President Thomas Jefferson, for one, was sure that… MORE

You or someone you know may have been heard to say, “I just don’t get it. I’ve tried to like wine, but I don’t. I’d rather have a Margarita or a beer any day.” Fair enough. There are a few foods and beverages that I don’t enjoy, not counting the disgusting stuff eaten and/or drunk on some… MORE

Think you have it tough in today’s weak economy?  After hearing a story told by Patrick Will, Vice President of Ex Cellars Wine Agencies, Inc, I have redefined my idea of what constitutes a “hostile workplace.” I talked with Patrick at a wine tasting held at Sigel’s, and he shared a… MORE

Nobody wants to play with me. It all started a couple years ago, when a friend, Joyce, sent me the published version of a food trivia game she’d created and sold to Chronicle Books. It’s called “Foodie Fight,” and it’s a truckload of fun. I enjoy learning things accidentally, under the cover MORE

Right now, readers, I’m trying to think of some clever way to address you en masse, i.e. Dame Edna and her “Hello, Possums!” shtick. How about, “Hola, Coyotes,” or “Ciao, Chipmunks”? Uh, maybe not. The deal is I am trying to find My Voice, that all-important online je ne sais quoi that will… MORE

I don’t do well at Halloween parties. I don’t know why. They should be easy. Halloween parties come with built-in conversation starters: costumes. But I think I just prefer smaller, more intimate crowds. Costumes are distracting. Plus I’ve had bad luck. I went to a party once as Sideshow… MORE

I’m happy that science keeps saying such nice things about red wine. It’s like when a stranger mentions she likes my mustache or my rodeo belt buckle. It’s nice, it’s affirming, it makes me feel good about my choices, but it’s not entirely necessary. I’d drink the wine, I’d wear the belt buc MORE
